1. Live from Seybold
--------------------
FireWire products were much in evidence at the recent Macworld Expo,
and those of you who attend the Seybold Conference in San Francisco
next week are likely to see quite a few FireWire products there,
too.
If you can't get to San Francisco for the show and Steve Jobs's
keynote, we have two alternate ways for you to take part. One is to
attend a live satellite downlink or broadcast:
http://www.seminars.apple.com/series/SBSF001/index.html
The other is to watch a live streaming broadcast of the keynote,
available only if you ford your streams using QuickTime 4:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/showcase/live/seybold99/
----------------
2. Why FireWire?
----------------
It's fast, supporting transfer speeds of up to 400 Mbps.
It's scalable, supporting up to 63 peripheral devices.
It's hot-pluggable, so it's easy to connect and disconnect devices
on the fly without restarting your computer.
And a growing number of products come FireWire-ready. Digital VCRs.
Music synthesizers. Scanners. Hard disk drives. Digital Video
cameras. DVD juke boxes. Digital still cameras. Magneto-optical
drives. Hubs. CD-RW drives. Video editing systems. Speaker systems.
And more.

3. FireWire Storage Options Growing
-----------------------------------
Whether you prefer traditional hard disk drives, magneto-optical
drives, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DAT, tape, or Zip, you can
find a FireWire drive that meets your needs from a growing number of
storage device vendors: Castlewood, Datafab, Escient, Fantom,
Fujitsu, Indigita, La Cie, MacTell, QPS, VST Technologies, and
others.
To see a listing of some of the FireWire storage devices currently
(or soon to be) available, visit:

-----------------
4. FireWire to Go
-----------------
With more and more FireWire storage devices, digital and still video
cameras, scanners, and other peripherals coming to market, wouldn't
it be nice if you could use them with your PowerBook G3?
Now you can. With a CardBus card from Newer Technologies (the
FireWire 2 Go card), Orange Micro (OrangeLink FireWire CardBus PC
Card), or VST Technologies (FireWire PC CardBus Card). For more
information:

In fact, add FireWire and Final Cut Pro to your PowerBook G3, and
you have a full-featured video editing workstation you can take
anywhere.

5. Speed I Need
---------------
At McCann-Erickson, one of the largest ad agencies in the world,
they have redefined the term "power user." After all, practically
every Power Macintosh G3 in the shop speeds along with 896MB of RAM
installed and a whopping 9GB of storage to handle the massive
digital files they juggle.
So when they needed a bigger and faster server to manage their
digital media assets (we're talking terabytes of data here, folks),
they turned to Mac OS X Server, a solution that immediately
delivered a "giant speed increase" and vastly improved productivity
for all:

6. Apple in Education
---------------------
The administration and faculty at Saint Joseph's University, a
148-year-old institution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were
determined to build a 21st-century learning environment for their
students.
They wanted all students to have portable computers that were easy
to use, could go easily from classroom to lab to dorm room, and
could run every application, including Windows applications, being
used at the university.
What solution answered their prayers?

Phenomenal.
That's the only way to describe the reaction to QuickTime 4.
In just 120 days, more than 12 million copies of QuickTime have been
downloaded, and we've been approached by so many people eager to
create their own digital media that we've decided to host a
first-of-its-kind event.
We call it QuickTime Live.
Designed to address the needs of those who create digital media or
who want to stream video and/or audio over the Internet, the
QuickTime Live conference will feature keynotes, full-day workshops,
breakout sessions and a product showcase featuring the latest
development tools based on QuickTime technology.
QuickTime Live will be held in Los Angeles, California, November
8-11. For complete details or to register, visit:

Music by Macintosh. Throughout the month of August, the editors at
MacDirectory have been speaking with musicians who compose, mix,
master CD's, and, of course, play music on their Macintosh
computers. Listen in at:

Discerning digerati like Matthew Rothenberg (ZDNet) and Stephen H.
Wildtrom (BusinessWeek) get it. In "Will iBook sink or swim?" and
"More Punch in Apple Portables," they explain how we're designing
mobile products that meet the needs of consumer and professional
alike:

Pick up a camcorder these days, and you're almost guaranteed to find
a FireWire port. Well, the same features that make FireWire so
appealing to videographers (speed, ease of use, hot-plug and
-unplug) make it equally attractive to digital still photographers.
That's why Kodak's newest professional digital cameras, the DCS 315
and DCS 660, feature FireWire:

Looking for a mobile FireWire video editing solution? Look no
further than the FireMAX Portable Studio/Pro from ProMax, featuring
our own Final Cut Pro:

"Work less. Do more." That's the theme of our popular AppleScript
seminar. It's touring the U.S. and coming your way soon, so be sure
