Hi All.
I just tested here on my OS/2 Client Warp 4.5 (Warp 4.0 + FixPak 13) the new
version of ConfigTool (V. 0.92), developed by Goran
Ivankovic and Klaus Staedtler. I installed
this new version without problems and it is running just fine here. ConfigTool
is a tool really efficient and I recommend it for all OS/2 users. I evaluated
this new nice release and rated it five Butterflies:

ConfigTool Rated 5 Butterflies
To see for yourself the very good performance of this soft jump to the developers web site, download cfgtool092.zip (569K) and unzip it into an appropriate directory, e.g. CFGTOOL. You will see the files that you can see here inside my default file manager for OS/2, Larsen Commander:

In order to install this fine release just click the CFGinst.cmd and an OS/2 prompt will be started with some simple asks. You answer it and the soft will be installed. In the screenshot below you can see the Install prompt:

When the ConfigTool is installed a folder is created on your Workplace Shell, as you can see in the next photo below:

ConfigTool is CONFIG.SYS editor with searchable database
which explains the entries, sort and checking routines, boot/recovery options
and suggestions for optimization.
CFGTOOL.DAT database is based on OS2CFG11.DAT for ConfigInfo 4.0 by Rick Meigs.
All entries from the CM2CFG.DAT for ConfigMaint/2 are also included, as some
of the howto.dat.

New in this release
Version 0.92:
- Enhanced Sorting
- Boot/Recovery Options
- Basic suggestions for Optimization
- Greatly expanded Cfgool.dat thanks to user reports
(with 722 entries in database).
About ConfigTool
For OS/2 the CONFIG.SYS is - beside the OS2.INI
and the OS2SYS.INI - one essential configuration file, without it - or
with wrong entries - OS/2 will fail to start or produce errors. As IBM
has 1. no specialised editor delivered with OS2 (for editing without any support
any editor can be used) and 2. more important, there are tons of undocumented
parts in the CONFIG.SYS we believe a editor specialised for the CONFIG.SYS
should be quite useful to anybody using OS/2.
Although there are some specialised editors like e.g.
Warp n'Go or Tyra/2, we follow another philosophy: Instead hiding the
sometimes cryptic CONFIG.SYS behind a comfortable graphical interface with user
selectable options, we present the 'naked' CONFIG.SYS with a database behind
which explains the entries.
The caveat with this philosophy is: more flexibility and information for the user and for us the possibility to add quickly new settings, drivers ...
BTW: Our database will be merged with the CONFIG.SYS FAQ maintained by Joerg Sievers - who also does the support for TYRA/2 now - so there will be only ONE CONFIG.SYS Database for all users in the future.
For new users this solution is less comfortable, as there is the necessity to read the entries in the database before they can change something, but doing this they will understand what they do. And additionally, reading the database will show some hints, tips, settings or programs they've not been aware.
Some years ago (exactly in 1994/5) there was the excellent tool ConfigInfo for OS/2 2.1 and Warp3, but as Rick Meigs, the developer, has stopped further development or updates, Klaus Staedtler decided in 1998 to update the Database of ConfigInfo. Although there where lots of positive responses, there was also a growing report of errors which couldn't be solved lacking the sources of ConfigInfo.
Then in 1999 Klaus Staedtler developed together with
Kai Evers ConfigMaint, a new tool which should succeed ConfigInfo. Unfortunately
something similarily happened: Kai Evers has stopped since one year further
development until he will have more free time. Although ConfigMaints has it's
merits, it has some deficits: more editing, more advice and it is - on
older systems - very slow.
In this unpleasant situation Goran Ivankovic offered to develop a new ConfigTool which should combine the fortunes of both ConfigInfo and ConfigMaint.
At the moment he have build in the main futures for
an save editing of the CONFIG.SYS, the database which tries to demistify the
CONFIG.SYS entries is up to date (Warp 3, Warp 4 and Warp 4.5 ), some checking
and sorting routines are implemented, there is an possibility to edit the bootscreen
and the bootoptions, and some basic suggestions to optimize your system are
build in. Further enhancements are planned and in development.
The authors hope that the free ConfigTool will fullfill your needs. If
not please send a mail so that we can make it better.
