FREMONT, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) November 6, 2000 -- BiTMICRO NETWORKS Inc., developer of high performance flash disk, solid-state disk and network storage solutions, today announced the release of its E-Disk SCW35 which is the world's first true hot swappable solid-state storage solution.
The E-Disk SCW35 is BiTMICRO's latest answer to the increasing multi-industry demand for enhanced solid-state disk storage solutions providing optimum performance, reliability and uptime. Designed and configured to meet Level 4 Hot Swap criteria, the SCW35 can be inserted and removed from a server, RAID system or a JBOD environment without powering down. At this level, the removal or insertion of the E-Disk can be implemented even while the affected bus may have active ongoing I/O processes.
"Our SCW35 is implemented with the Ultra-Wide SCSI-3 ANSI standard interface that combines the hot swappable feature never before seen in a solid-state storage solution and the industry leading characteristics of our previous E-Disk product lines," said Tom Griffin, BiTMICRO's Vice President of Marketing and Sales. "This product is ideal for enterprise hot files and mission critical applications, allowing its users to remove and replace a drive without incurring the cost and inconvenience of idling down the affected bus or shutting down the system," Griffin added.
The E-Disk SCW35 features unmatched I/0 performance with a fast access time
of less than 0.049 milliseconds and random sustained and burst read and write
transfer rates of more than 34 MBytes/sec and 40 MBytes/sec respectively. The
lightweight SCW35 offers a non-volatile solid-state flash storage capacity ranging
from 256 MBytes up to 18.6 GBytes in a 3.5-inch standard form factor with low-power
consumption requirements.
This new version of BiTMICRO's high performance E-Disk is built on the company's
proven FlashBus patented technology and sophisticated design. The all-electronic
SCW35 also incorporates E-Disk's Preventative, Predictive and Corrective Maintenance
features which are the keys to minimize system downtime. Some of these features
are as follows:
· Flash Memory Scrubbing
- automatically monitors and corrects errors in every location of the flash
memory in the background without affecting system performance.
· Error Correction Code (ECC)
Threshold - the user may configure the ECC correctable threshold. A block is
remapped when the number of correctable errors in that block reaches the threshold
value. This reduces the chance that a good block will be tagged unusable and
correctly identifies a block that is on the verge of producing uncorrectable
errors.
· Wear-out Monitor - the system
can monitor the block erase/write wear-out statistics. The E-Disk also provides
a special LED signal warning when the total number of writes has reached 95%
of the flash manufacturers tested limit. Note that E-Disk operation does not
necessarily degrade after exceeding the flash manufacturers erase/write cycle
limit.
· Automatic Remap for any bad
block. A warning indicator is provided when 95% of the allocated remap table
has been committed.
· Wear Leveling evenly distributes
the number of erase/write cycles over the entire flash device.
· PowerGuard prevents data
loss and corruption due to ungraceful power degradation.
BiTMICRO has also provided E-Disk with Corrective Maintenance features to minimize downtime speed system recovery. E?Disk built-in diagnostics and E?Disk Analyzer Lite can be used to facilitate troubleshooting. BiTMICRO's firmware solutions are field upgradable and nearly universal across the E-Disk product line which further simplifies before and after sales field support.
The implementation of BiTMICRO's proprietary wear leveling and bad-block auto-remapping techniques virtually extends E-Disk's flash memory erase/write endurance by several orders of magnitude. With these features in place, a 4.6 GByte E-Disk can sustain an average of 100 GBytes of erase/write cycles per day for more than 123 years or a scaled down average of 100 MBytes erase/write cycles per day for more than 126,000 years.
BiTMICRO's proprietary DataSentinel and PowerGuard is the industry's most comprehensive data protection package. DataSentinel's custom on-the-fly ECC logic is capable of correcting multiple error bursts without performance loss and is a million times more powerful than its closest competitor.
"With the growing concern of the high-end server and enterprise market for data integrity and availability in focus, BiTMICRO NETWORKS has again proven our ability to respond to our customers with the introduction of a solid-state storage solution designed to decrease and avoid downtime while maintaining peak performance and capacity," said Rudy Bruce, founder and CEO.
The E-Disks are solid-state flash disk drive plug-and-play solutions that have been tested on all major platforms. E-Disks are fully compatible with Linux, Solaris, Windows NT, MacOS, and LynxOS. Other supported operating systems include AIX, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, NetBSD, OS/2, QNX, VxWorks, SCO Unixware and OpenServer, Solaris X86 and Tru64.
The E-Disk SCW35 is a drop-in replacement for any standard single-ended SCSI 3.5-inch hard drive, flash disk or solid-state disk drive with an 80-pin SCA-2 connector. For product pricing and information, contact BiTMICRO NETWORKS at http://www.bitmicro.com or (510) 74E-DISK / (510) 743- 3475.
