Undeleting on NTFS with File Scavenger

In Affiliation with Beyond.com

File Scavenger is an utility that searches for deleted files on NTFS partitions and, in most cases, can undelete them. This utility has been tested on Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 3.51 and Citrix WinFrame® 1.6 and 1.7. You can download a trial copy (scavw40.zip, 1,40MB) from the developers web site clicking the logo below.

The developers of File Scavenger -QueTek Consulting Corporation - is a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider and a member of the Citrix Solutions Network. QCC use technologies based
on Microsoft Windows NT ®, Citrix thin client products and our own commercial software products to provide solutions to your business computing problems.

File Scavenger version 1.22 now supports NTFS compression. The Help file that comes with the product may state otherwise and will be corrected in the next release. "We are sorry about the misleading information"- saids QCC.

File Scavenger can undelete files on an NTFS partition on a Windows NT® computer if the disk areas allocated to the files have not been reused. It may work even after the disk has been reformatted.

To run File Scavenger you must log on to a Windows NT® computer as a system administrator. File Scavenger works on local NTFS partitions. The program and associated libraries can fit onto a single floppy disk. (Note that even if you have File Scavenger on a floppy disk, you still must boot up to Windows NT on your computer before you can run this utility.)

Following these steps to recover files:

·       Enter the file name and select the drive letter where the file or files resided originally.  Pattern matching and directory names can be part of the filename (for example, “*.txt” or “dir1\*.txt”).
·       Click on Search.  File Scavenger will start scanning the drive.  You might click stop to stop searching any time.
·       Select the files you want to restore in the file list.
·       Specify the target drive. Then click on Recover
.

Disclaimer: Files can only be restored under certain conditions, such as the disk areas allocated to the files have not been overwritten. When a file is restored, there is no guarantee that the content of the recovered file is the same as the original. It is your responsibility to validate that the data are intact prior to using them.
