 Hi All.
I just tested here on my Windows NT 4.0 fixed by Service Pack 6 the new release of Microsoft Internet Explorer: Version 5.5 Beta. Several bugs included on the version 5.01 has been fixed but again exist much more to make for the stat of art to be enough...

Hot on the heels of the release of version 5.01, Microsoft has made a beta version of Internet Explorer 5.5 available to the public. If you're looking for a ton of flashy new features, you might be a bit disappointed. However, several behind-the-scenes enhancements have been made, such as improved support for DHTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and the new Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. And if you're into printing what you find on the Web, you'll be glad to hear that this version of IE includes a new print preview feature.

In the photo above you can see Windows Update downloading data from Microsoft  Server using Active Setup in order to upgrade my Internet Explorer 5.01 to the new version just released this weekend, Beta 5.5. The download was easy and fast and I made it using my CNET link. In the photo below you can see Windows Update installing the new browser on my NT4 SP6:

Note that you are using GetRight you must be disable it for good performace of Active Setup. If you don't disable it the GetRight monitor catches the file OAINST.EXE (467KB) and try save it. If you click this exe accidentally or by inexperience you will experiment problems and must be resume the Active Setup in order to perform a correct installation (but this task consumes only few minutes, or seconds, to depend on your internet connection.

I use this new release here intensive, loading several pages at the same time as you can see in the photo above and have not any problem! I'm using here also Netscape Communicator 4.7 that runs rather than IE 5.5 because you can personalize his cache RAM configuration: I setted 40MB cache RAM and 1MB cache disk and my Netscape is simply flying on NT4 SP6, man! But Netscape have some problems and one is the famous "transfer interrupted", problem that not exist in Microsoft Internet Explorer. But Internet Explorer have some other problems, as the famous "This page can be displayed...". Sincerely, I need this two browsers here: Netscape for surf on the Net visiting sites and MS IE for works nited with Namo Web Editor (with this combination you simply can perform all taks you intend as a webmaster. Try and see for yourself. Using this combination I update everyday dozens of pages at the same time without any problem. IE 5.5 is really optimized for web works.

Description

Note: IE 5.5 beta features Active Setup (a 475K file), which requires that you maintain your Internet connection after you double-click ie5setup.exe. Active Setup will prompt you to choose among various IE packages; these range in size from 8.3MB to over 40MB, with a typical install of 11.8MB. This is a beta version and may contain bugs or cause your system to become unstable.

Internet Explorer 5.5 beta includes support for Dynamic HTML, Java, and the Channel Definition Format (CDF). An AutoSearch feature lets you choose your search engine and display search results in different ways. For example, you can choose to be redirected automatically to the best-matched site. In the history box, you can sort the list of sites by date, site, most visited, or the order visited. The AutoComplete feature displays a drop-down list of matching sites when you start to type a URL in the address bar. AutoComplete also works with Web forms, displaying a list of previous entries when you start to type in a field on a Web site. To automate login processes even further, you can also save usernames and passwords for particular sites. Internet Explorer offers 56-bit encryption and includes a Radio Toolbar, which allows you to listen to radio stations over the Internet as you browse. IE also allows you to select the default email, calendar, newsgroup, and HTML editors of your choice. You can even designate your Web-based email provider as the default email program.

Version 5.5 beta, the latest in this Web browser line, includes improved support for DHTML behaviors, as well as additional support for vertical text and existing standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 1). IE 5.5 beta also features additional support for the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL). A print preview feature has been added to this version. Other new features include improvements in printing performance and several Internet enhancements that will be included in the upcoming Windows Millennium.
