JavaTM Distributed Computing
technology Further Enabled
by Support for IIOP
IBM and Sun Team up to Provide Complete Support
for JavaTM RMI over IIOP
PALO ALTO, CA - Sun Microsystems Inc. and
IBM today announced an agreement to jointly develop and
implement support for the JavaTM Remote Method Invocation
(JavaTM RMI) over the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP). This
implementation will combine the advantages of the Java RMI
interface for distributed systems programming with the Object
Management Group's CORBA architecture for distributed
computing.
The implementation of the JavaTM RMI interface over IIOP will
ship as standard extensions to the latest release of the JavaTM
Development Kit (JDKTM software 1.1.6) and the next major
release of the JDK software (code-named "JDK 1.2"); the
implementation will also be in the core of the subsequent major
release of the JDK software. In addition to this new support for
IIOP, Sun will continue to ship, enhance and support the Java RMI
interface over the original Java Remote Method Protocol (JRMP),
which was first shipped in JDK software 1.1.
"By creating a means for developers to take advantage of two
powerful transport protocols - IIOP and JRMP - the Java platform is
now more than ever the premiere environment for object-oriented
enterprise application development and deployment," said Jon
Kannegaard, vice president of software products for Sun's Java
Software. "Today's announcement underscores an ongoing
commitment by Sun and IBM to empower developers using the
Java programming language with the greatest possible Java
technologies for successful application development and is great
news for enterprises that can now count on greater interoperability
for their mission-critical applications."
"The combination of Java technology and CORBA is the distributed
object infrastructure that will be used to build the next generation
of e-business applications," said Ian Brackenbury, chief
technologist at IBM's Center for Java Technology in Hursley,
England. "Bringing the Java RMI interface into this infrastructure is
great news for Java platform developers, as it allows them to take
advantage of the popular Java RMI programming model together
with full interoperability with CORBA-based distributed systems
using IIOP."
The Java RMI technology enables developers of distributed
applications in the Java programming language to treat remote
objects and their methods as if they are local objects. This brings a
high level of functionality to distributed programs with features like
distributed, automatic management of objects and passing objects
themselves from machine to machine over a network. Allowing
these objects to be passed over a network using the popular IIOP
protocol in addition to JRMP expands the power and possibilities
for Java platform developers because it will provide immediate
support for CORBA-based objects.
