(well, I, @Macarlo, use Hot Java Browser...)
J&J Computer Consulting announces today that a beta release of j-Shepherd
is nearly ready. j-Shepherd is an object-oriented server framework that takes advantage
of the common components of Internet servers to reduce size and increase speed,
flexibility, and scalability. The first beta-release will focus on testing the server
engine and the configuration and administration systems. An implementation of J&J's
j-Chat protocol has been developed for testing these systems, but the test will
expand to other protocols in the near future.
Features available in the beta-release will include:
- Command line configuration interface (local and remote)
- Dynamic loading and unloading of protocol components
- Common user administration system
- Common access control system
- Sybase SQL Anywhere 5.0 Database for Configuration Data
- Thread pooling
- Virtual host support
- and more...
While you may not be interested in implementing a chat system, the j-Chat protocol
will help to identify possible problems or shortcomings in the system. It is also
a fairly simple protocol and will help eliminate the possibility of problems in
the protocol implementation while we are working more on the server engine and administration
systems. Once we are comfortable with these systems, the test will expand to other
protocols that are already under development.
Potential beta testers should have a connection to the Internet, preferably permanent,
OS/2 Warp 3.0 or better, and at least a 486 or better processor. The early betas
will not be for the timid as we do not anticipate providing an install program until
we get closer to release. To apply for the beta, please send and e-mail with j-Shepherd
Beta in the subject and the following information to
info@ceri-net.com:
- Name
- E-mail Address
- Mailing Address
- Phone
- OS/2 Version (with fixpacks and tcp/ip version)
- Machine Configuration (Processor, Memory, etc.)
Those selected for the beta test will receive a free copy of the j-Shepherd engine
with two protocols of their choice. The beta will hopefully start sometime in mid
June to early July. Please refer to our web site for more information, or contact
us at info@ceri-net.com if you have any questions.
Developers interested in using the j-Shepherd engine for developing their own servers
are encouraged to contact us. OS/2 users are also encouraged to let us know if they
have any protocols in particular that they would be interested in seeing J&J
implement in the j-Shepherd framework.
(Before anyone asks, the 'j' in j-Shepherd does not stand for Java. It stands for
'j' as in J&J. j-Shepherd is implemented as a native OS/2 program.)
