Win NT Workstation
wins PC Magazine's
Readers' Choice
Seal of Approval

Magazine readers give Microsoft business desktop
operating system high marks for reliability.
REDMOND, WA - Microsoft« Windows NT« Workstation has impressed some
of the toughest critics around: everyday users.
PC Magazine recently conducted its annual poll to find out readers' opinions of
the desktop software they use most. To qualify for the coveted Readers' Choice distinction,
a product must receive an above-average rating on two critical criteria: overall
satisfaction and how likely the user would be to recommend the product to others.
In the operating systems category, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 made the
cut.
According to the article in the July 1998 magazine, "Not only are more readers
using Windows NT [Workstation] 4.0, but there has also been an increase in their
overall satisfaction with this environment."
That should come as no surprise to Microsoft.
The company recently reported that license sales for Windows NT Workstationùthe
desktop operating system optimized for business environmentsùhave increased
more than 36 percent in just the past seven months. This sales surge brings the
total units sold beyond 15 million. And judging from the PC Magazine poll, many
of those customers are overwhelmingly satisfied.
"Microsoft is pleased that its customers have distinguished Windows NT Workstation
in the PC Magazine poll," said Bob Visse, Windows client product manager at
Microsoft.
"Windows NT Workstation is becoming the desktop of choice for companies because
it helps them lower the total cost of owning technology while still providing an
operating system that's powerful enough for mission-critical applications."
Designed to be easy to use, manage and integrate, Windows NT Workstation offers
users the look and feel of Windows« 98 and IT managers the powerful tools
they need for easy management and quick troubleshooting. The familiar Windows interface
can cut training time and costs, and the management tools allow administrators to
monitor and maintain desktops remotely, reducing expensive downtime. Windows NT
Workstation further trims companies' total cost of owning technology because it
runs 32-bit applications, as well as many MS-DOS« and 16-bit Windows applications,
reliably and securely. This flexibility allows businesses to protect their investments
in software.
And the flexibility of the entire Windows family means that for virtually every
environment, there is a reliable, powerful Windows operating system.
The Windows family includes the intuitive interface and integrated Internet capability
of the Windows 98 desktop operating system as well as the enhanced security and
manageability of Windows NT Workstation. From the convenient Windows CE-based Palm-size
PC to the BackOffice« family's multipurpose server operating system, Windows
NT Server, the Windows family is designed to be scalable and easy to use and manage.
And with the recently released Windows NT Server, Terminal Server Edition and its
MetaFrame add-on product, companies can run Windows-based applications and display
them on almost any kind of desktop machine, including UNIX and Macintosh.
"Windows NT Workstation and the rest of the Windows family offer people the
ability to work productively in the office, on the road, in the carùvirtually
anywhere," said Visse. "And the results of this readers poll show that
our customers appreciate that capability."
