Park, California and Oslo, Norway - 08 December 1999
Be Incorporated and Opera Software A/S today announced a development and
marketing agreement to deliver web browsing technology for Be's software
platforms. Under the agreement, Be and Opera Software are cooperating to
deliver a version of Opera Software's web browser, which Be will offer as
part of both its Internet appliance software platform, code-named Stinger,
and its desktop operating system, BeOS. The parties expect to deliver the
first software under the agreement in the first quarter of 2000.

The Opera browser has already received
worldwide acclaim for its
efficiency, robust feature set and compatibility with leading web
standards, including HTML 3.2, JavaScript, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) 2.0
and 3.0, and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), allowing most content online
today to be viewed effortlessly and enabling secure transactions for
e-commerce.
Under the terms of the agreement, Be will bundle the Opera browser with
BeOS and the browser will serve as the user interface for the Stinger
platform, making it possible for Stinger licensees to create customized
interfaces for Internet appliances. Additionally, licensees will be able to
leverage existing web content, providing access through the Opera browser.
Stinger with the Opera browser will enable a far more personalized
interface and user experience than is currently possible using PC-based
browsers.
"Opera Software is widely known for building one of the world's best
browsers," said Steve Sakoman, chief technical officer of Be and general
manager of Be's Internet appliance efforts. "The Opera browser is fast,
flexible and supports virtually every major web standard in use today. Not
only will the Opera browser complement our desktop software, it is poised
to offer the best browsing experience available for Internet appliances."
"With its high performance and low resource requirements, Be is the ideal
operating system for our browser," said Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner,
co-founder and chief executive officer of Opera Software. "Together with
our browser, Be's outstanding media capabilities will enable the next
generation of Internet appliances: fast, simple to use and with a richer,
more satisfying web experience than is possible today."
Stinger is the code name for Be's compelling software solution designed for
the creation of appliances that deliver information and entertainment over
the web. Based on BeOS, Stinger is fully customizable and supports popular
streaming audio and video standards. Be expects to formally introduce
Stinger in the first quarter of 2000.
