Sun Announces Key
Technology to Bring Power
of Java Technology to
Programmable Logic Devices

New API to bring open standards and Java platform
compatibility to programmable electronic system design.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 9, 1998 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
today announced a new technology that extends the
functionality of Sun's smallest Java Virtual Machine --
currently used with the Java Card API -- to a key market
beyond the smart card. The specification of the Java API for
the boundary scan market will provide a blueprint to help
developers rapidly generate applications for the dynamic
testing, debugging and reconfiguration of programmable
logic devices (PLDs).

This new Java API can be deployed by any PLD supplier, as
well as manufacturers of automatic test equipment, device
programmers and software developers.

Sun hopes to provide a solution for unifying the generation
and distribution of programs required for configuring, testing
and debugging in system programmable devices and
boundary-scan chips that are compliant with the IEEE 1149.1
standard, while offering manufacturers of electronic
equipment the flexibility and power that customers need in
an increasingly networked environment.

"The Java platform is becoming a standard application
environment for many kinds of networkable electronics -- so
much so that specific industries are seeing the need for
dedicated Java technology solutions," said Patrice Peyret,
Director, Sun Microsystems' Consumer and Embedded. "The
new API for boundary scan will bring a new level of
functionality and compatibility to chip set and electronic
board design."

Sun presented the proposal for this new API at the June 1
meeting of the JEDEC committee for consideration. Since
the development of this API is in the formative stages, all
potential users and suppliers have the opportunity to
contribute to the development of the specification through
Sun's open development process.
