EDS and Sun Announce a JavaTM Technology Alliance Aimed at Developing Vertical and Cross-Industry Enterprise and Thin-Client Computing Solutions

DALLAS -- Imagine: a company's employees can learn
about, select, enroll and pay for personalized health benefits plans
on their corporate Intranet rather than filling out reams of
paperwork. A food services distributor can better manage inventory
levels, reduce costs and improve customer service via an Extranet
that permits restaurant franchises to purchase and track their orders
online. EDS (NYSE: EDS - news) and Sun Microsystems, Inc.
today announced a JavaTM technology alliance that will result in the
development and deployment of these and other business solutions
in a number of targeted industries, including financial services,
manufacturing, health care, retail, wholesale and
telecommunications. All of these solutions will meet Sun's 100%
Pure JavaTM certification standards.

``We're very excited about this alliance with EDS,'' said Scott
McNealy, president, CEO and chairman of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
``When you put our two companies together in front of customers,
we're able to present a wonderful, broad-scale solution that goes
from the smart card to the supercomputer, that embraces the Web
and moves companies forward from their current computing
environments.''

The EDS-Sun Java Technology Alliance

To assist companies in using Internet and Java technologies to
improve their business performance and operational efficiencies,
EDS and Sun Microsystems have announced an enterprise and
thin-client computing services framework. c2oSM, EDS' online
marketing consulting and Internet technology services unit, is the
primary point of contact for delivering these services, which
include:

Online business strategy - Business strategists,
communications specialists, creative design consultants and
technologists use research and financial modeling tools to
build a case for conducting business online, and identify
opportunities to apply Java technology to streamline
operations, reduce costs, generate revenues and improve
customer service. c2o delivers the results in a strategy
document that includes a detailed timeline, specific actions
and realistic cost estimates.

Architecture and Implementation - c2o applies its
resources toward technical and information architecture,
object-oriented analysis and design, applications
development, legacy systems integration, and automated
regression testing to transform an e-strategy into a working
business model. c2o also makes use of a large, cross-industry
repository of reusable design patterns and business
components. These are used to build sophisticated Internet,
intranet and extranet sites with high-end functionality such as
interactive, personalized customer service, online catalog
purchasing and order tracking.

Operations and Maintenance - Includes custom hosting
in the EDS WebVaultTM, content management systems,
shared and dedicated server access, and around-the-clock
performance monitoring. Also includes ongoing business
performance measurements that determine the success of a
Web strategy.

c2o applies these processes to guide companies through the
development of their thin-client business-to-consumer and
business-to-business Web initiatives. The c2o Java practice
demonstrates EDS' continued investment in being a global
information services provider with the highest level of customer
support and service. In particular, EDS has made a commitment to
enhance its competency in Java development technologies and
architectures, to develop and deploy Web business applications for
a heterogeneous, multi- platform environment and to deliver 100%
Pure Java applications.

EDS Java Technology Training Program

To support EDS' efforts to develop a strong Java technology
practice, Sun Microsystems has collaborated with EDS to train and
certify EDS systems engineers (SE) in using and applying Java
technology. EDS kicked off the Java computing training program in
October 1997. Since then, more than 300 SEs have been trained
and are being certified in using Java technology in the company's
Dallas, Detroit and New Zealand offices.

EDS Java Technology Training Program participants dedicate their
class time to developing 100% Pure Java applications and
thin-client business prototypes for EDS' global customers. Many of
the prototypes developed -- such as the health benefits registration
application called Enrollment WizardTM -- are subsequently applied
to a customer's enterprise computing environment.

``We're very pleased that Sun was willing to invest the time and
resources needed to ensure that Java technology is learned,
understood and applied in meaningful ways to our customers'
business and computing environments,'' said Gary Fernandes, vice
chairman of EDS. ``With Sun's continued involvement in the
EDS-Sun Java Technology Alliance, I'm convinced that our Java
Computing practice will flourish and that we will continue to excel
in helping our customers improve their business performance and
efficiencies.''
