Sun Microsystems Ships
Sun Developer Essentials
Foundation Edition

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- Sept. 1, 1998 -- Sun Microsystems,
Inc. today announced the availability of the SunTM
Developer EssentialsTM - Foundation Edition, an
inexpensive subscription package designed to help
small developers stay ahead of the technology curve
and to speed development using SunTM technologies.
The Foundation Edition subscription package is a
complete collection of products, tools and pre-release
technology for use by developers in the development
and testing of commercial products for the JavaTM
platform. The SolarisTM operating environment version of
this subscription package will be available next quarter.

In March 1998, Sun announced The SunTM Developer
ConnectionTM, a large-scale restructuring and
consolidation of the company's entire developer support
network. As the first installment of the Sun Developer
Essentials program, the Foundation Edition subscription
package underscores Sun's commitment to its
developer community and represents the latest step
towards delivering a simplified, comprehensive,
worldwide developer program. By offering special
developer software bundles such as the Foundation
Edition, Sun is providing developers with easier access
to its software and Java technology.

The Sun Developer Essentials - Foundation Edition
subscription package is priced at $195 (US) for a
one-year subscription. This package contains the JavaTM
WorkShopTM, JavaTM StudioTM and JavaTM JumpStartTM
software. Sun also will include for a limited time a bonus
copy of the Solaris operating environment for either the
SPARCTM or Intel platform with the Foundation Edition
subscription package. This bonus copy includes the
HotJavaTM browser and the Java virtual machine.
Additionally, subscribers will have the convenience of
receiving regular quarterly software updates from Sun.

"Sun is steadfastly committed to helping the small
commercial, corporate and independent developer
succeed," said Brian Gentile, vice president of Sun
Developer Relations at Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s Java
Software. "With the Sun Developer Essentials program
we are significantly re-designing our developer
software, API and early access distribution model to
provide our developers with more direct access to Sun
technology. We are creating an aggressive and
competitive program to provide developers with the
basic software technologies and information resources
required in an inexpensive and timely manner."
