PALO ALTO, Calif. July 27 - Sun Microsystems,
Inc. made another drive, called Jini, into software. This time, with a program that
makes it easier to connect and share devices such as printers and disk drives on
a computer network, according to reports.
Jini is designed to be included in personal computer
peripherals.
Those products today are often linked directly to a single PC, for that user alone,
or may be shared only by PCs that use the same operating system.
Imagine bringing home a new DVD drive. You plug it in to your home
network, and find that it can be called upon throughout the house --
instantly -- to show movies on your television, access encyclopedia
CDs from your home computer, or play music on your stereo. The
DVD player has become a ubiquitous DVD service on your network.
