SUN ACCELERATES ADOPTION OF SUN INTERNET MAIL SERVER SOFTWARE -- 5 MILLION MAILBOXES SOLD.

PALO ALTO, Calif., September 23, 1998 -- SunTM
Microsystems, Inc. today announced that companies
around the world are rapidly moving to a more scalable
and reliable messaging solution by migrating to the
award-winning SunTM Internet Mail ServerTM software. In
just a few short months, Sun Internet Mail Server has
taken the industry by storm selling more than 5 million
mailboxes to leading Internet Service Provider (ISP) and
Enterprise Service Provider (ESP) customers, including
Infoseek, BC TEL Interactive, SBC Internet Services and
Cegetel.

Sun also announced today commercial availability of its
highly-scalable Sun Internet Mail Server release 3.5
software. Designed specifically to meet the needs of
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Enterprise Service
Providers (ESPs), Sun's mail server delivers a reliable,
manageable and cost-effective foundation for business
outsourcing and Web-based email services.

"We believe Sun is one of the fastest growing new
players in the messaging space," said Laura Ventura,
market analyst with The Radicati Group, Inc., a leading
research firm specializing in messaging. "The company
is rapidly gaining ground in prestigious ISP accounts
and we believe they will be the next leader in
Internet-based messaging."

Stuart Wells, senior director of Network Software
Products at Sun, believes, "This success is a sign that
Sun has hit the mark with IT managers looking to lower
cost of ownership and improve reliability of their
strategic messaging services. Even more important is
the fact that service providers are recognizing the need
to provide messaging support to a variety of new remote
information devices, such as pagers, web phones, and
set-top boxes. This makes Sun Internet Mail Server
software's economies of scale -- 1 million mailboxes per
server -- a base requirement."

Infoseek Powers New Services on Sun Platform

Infoseek, one of the leading search engines and portal
sites on the Web, is dealing with increasing competition
by leveraging the Sun platform to boost the
cost-effectiveness, reliability, and performance of its
services. Recently, Infoseek chose to standardize on
Sun Internet Mail Server software and the SolarisTM
operating environment for its upcoming personalized
email services. Key in Infoseek's decision-making
process was the fact that Sun solutions are based on
Internet standards to ensure customers receive a
high-quality of service.

"Infoseek is committed to delivering exciting and
highly-functional new services, like email, aimed at
keeping consumers coming back to our site, again and
again," said Sue LaChance, director of technology
products at Infoseek. "By leveraging the reliability and
flexibility of the Sun platform, we will be deploying a
Web-based email service this fall that will be
personalized for consumers, from domain name all the
way to specific user preferences."

LaChance continued, "With Sun's ability to scale to
more than one million users per server, Infoseek will
keep its cost per mailbox extremely low, its
administration costs negligible, and, as a result, have a
competitive lead on other Web-based email providers
getting bogged down with overhead costs. This means
we can devote our resources to the development of new
value-added services to build the business."

BC TEL Interactive Delivers Internet-based Services

BC TEL Interactive develops and markets interactive and
multimedia services including interactive voice
response systems, electronic commerce applications
and Sympatico, the largest Internet service in British
Columbia with more than 75,000 customers. As with
many ISPs today, BC TEL Interactive is facing increasing
pressures associated with delivering new services
rapidly, retaining customers and controlling fixed costs.
BC TEL Interactive recently turned to the Solaris
operating environment and Sun Internet Mail Server
software to improve service quality and reduce costs in
a crowded and competitive market.

"As the largest Internet service provider in British
Columbia, we were looking for a scalable mail server
from a proven and reliable company," said Mark
Schnarr, vice-president and general manager of BC TEL
Interactive. "That's why we chose Sun Microsystems.
We're confident Sun can effectively meet our changing
needs in the future."
