Xylan Implements New
Internet-Based Oracle
Applications on Sun
Systems in Three Months
PALO ALTO, Calif. - October 26, 1998 - Sun Microsystems, Inc.
today announced that Xylan Corporation, a leading provider of network switching
equipment, has chosen server and storage technologies from Sun Microsystems for
its upgrade and implementation of Oracle Applications.
Xylan is one of the first Internet-based Oracle Applications and Sun customers
in North America to successfully deploy its ERP applications company-wide on its
Sun Enterprise servers and Solaris operating environment. Xylan chose to run Internet-based
Oracle Applications on Sun's systems because of their unmatched scalability, reliability
and price/performance features.
The company implemented Sun EnterpriseTM 5000 servers, Sun Enterprise 450 and 250
workgroup servers, Sun StorEdgeTM disk subsystems and the SolarisTM operating environment
to support Oracle's Internet model of computing - in just three months.
"Xylan is a fast growing networking company, and in a dynamic environment
like ours, we require reliable servers that will scale to accommodate our fast growth,"
said Panicos Kountouris, senior database administrator for Xylan. "While we
considered NT, Sun's servers running Solaris had proven reliability, price/performance
and applications availability, which NT couldn't beat."
"The Sun and Oracle combination in conjunction with Xylan's switched network
is highly successful," continued Kountouris. "We've had nearly zero unscheduled
downtime - and in a 7 by 24 environment, any downtime on our mission critical servers
would be damaging to our users and customers, and costly to maintain. By running
Oracle Applications on Sun we get reliable systems that are very cost-effective,
and we receive outstanding service."
In addition to reliability benefits, Xylan has also been able to focus on more
strategic IT issues. Sun Enterprise servers and Solaris operating environment present
less risk to customers like Xylan since they are easy to administer and maintain,
and configuration is simple, reducing the possibility of operator error.
"The fact that Xylan completed this significant upgrade of Internet-based
Oracle Applications on Sun in just three months is fantastic," said Doug Kaewert,
vice president of market development for Sun Microsystems. "With Internet-based
Oracle Applications on Sun, we can deliver a more competitive cost of ownership
model for customers than NT, and Xylan is proof of that."
Sun
and Oracle System and Service Highlights
Xylan chose two Sun Enterprise 5000 systems to run Oracle
7.3.3 for its database engines, Oracle8 Server for a Web-based application, and
Sun Enterprise 450 and Sun Enterprise 250 workgroup servers for its application
servers. Xylan is running Internet-based Oracle Applications 10.7 on top of the
robust Solaris operating environment. In addition, Xylan selected a number of D1000
Sun StorEdge disk subsystems.
Xylan Corporation is one of the leading campus switching companies in the world.
Its products combine LAN switching, ATM switching, layer-three switching, and wide
area switching, over a wide range of interfaces and media.
