Sun and Mentor Join Forces:
Microtec's XRAY Debugger

Sun and Mentor Graphics join forces to provide communications developers with powerful development environment: Microtec's XRAY Debugger Integrated with Sun's ChorusOS TM and JavaOS TM for Consumers TM Software.

Palo Alto, Calif. & San Jose, Calif., Sept. 21, 1998 -- Mentor
Graphics Corporation's (NASDAQ: MENT) Microtec
Division and Sun Microsystems Inc. Consumer and
Embedded today announced they have collaborated to
integrate Microtec's XRAY« Debugger with Sun's
ChorusOSTM and JavaOSTM for ConsumersTM operating
system development tools.

The XRAY Debugger is available to developers from Sun
as a component of the software developer kit, SunTM
Embedded WorkShopTM for ChorusOS and JavaOS for
Consumers software.

Embedded systems developers can now use this powerful
combination to develop and debug real-time software with
greater efficiency, thereby helping to reduce time to market
and development costs for new embedded devices.

"This joining of products offers an ideal solution for
meeting the embedded development needs of the
burgeoning communications marketplace," says Dr.
Jerome L. Krasner, research editor of the Miller Freeman
Electronic Market Forecasters Group. "Developers using
ChorusOS and JavaOS for Consumers software for key
applications will greatly benefit from having the XRAY
Debugger in their toolkit."

The XRAY debugger integrated with the developer tools for
the ChorusOS and JavaOS for Consumers products will
provide developers with a comprehensive debug solution.
It includes an easy-to-use host-based graphical user
interface (GUI) connected to a target monitor tightly
integrated with the ChorusOS and JavaOS operating
systems. Developers working on complex systems will
have stronger software verification capabilities that can be
fully exercised without the need to modify their application
programs.

"Sun is pleased to be working directly with Mentor
Graphics' Microtec Division to provide the XRAY Debugger
as an integrated element of our ChorusOS and JavaOS
products," said Jim Hebert, general manager of embedded
systems software for Sun Microsystems Consumer and
Embedded. "Mentor Graphics has considerable experience
optimizing developer tools for the embedded systems
market. This collaboration provides developers with a
comprehensive solution that is further proof of Sun and
Mentor Graphics' commitment to embedded software
developers."

"Sun Microsystems and Mentor Graphics have a long-term
relationship built on the mutual use of the best of each
other's technologies and on the delivery of electronic
design automation solutions to mutual customers," said
Bernd U. Braune, senior vice president, Mentor Graphics
Corporation. "This extension of our alliance with Sun
provides a robust and highly integrated software
development solution for embedded developers working in
the fast-growing communications market."

The XRAY Debugger enables embedded developers to
accelerate the edit-compile-download-debug process to
reduce total system verification time and speed
time-to-market for new products. Like Sun's ChorusOS,
XRAY is particularly well suited for telecommunications
applications. It is designed to attack the challenge of
debugging multitasking and multithreaded applications
through an enhanced GUI and underlying technologies.

ChorusOS software provides one of the most feature-rich,
real-time operating systems and development
environments in the industry. Its unique,
component-based OS architecture allows ChorusOS
configurations to be scaled seamlessly from very small
embedded instances (10 Kbytes) to transparently
distributed platforms offering high levels of functionality.
Multiple application programming interfaces, including
legacy environments, can be supported simultaneously on
a single hardware platform. High availability enablers make
the ChorusOS operating system ideal for mission-critical
embedded systems.

JavaOS for Consumers software is a premier operating
system for networked appliances such as set-top boxes,
interactive televisions, desktop and mobile Web phones,
and automotive navigation systems used for
communications, entertainment and mobile computing.
This new software expands on the JavaOSTM software
family of highly efficient and scaleable products optimized
for network computing using JavaTM technology.
