Order URL: https://secure.falcon-net.net/BMT/order1351.html Turbo Linux is designed to be an all-in-one Linux solution for all types of users,
from the novice to the expert, from the home user to the application developer to
the systems administrator. It combines power with ease of use, while compromising
neither.
This package features approximately 1000 megabytes (uncompressed) of software packages,
a powerful easy to use installation program, a custom desktop, and numerous configuration
and system administration tools and more.
Also included in this 3 disc set is the download version of Word Perfect 8 for
Linux.
Turbo Linux 3.0 is a major release with significant changes from previous versions.
A list of features includes:
- Improved kernel - Turbo Linux 3.0 uses a new Linux kernel, modified for modular
sound support, aic7xxx driver fixes, network security fixes, and others. This kernel
has an increased file table size for use on heavily-loaded servers, and is compiled
to work with IP Masquerading without the need to recompile. In fact, there is no
need to recompile the kernel at all with Turbo Linux 3.0 (although you may if you
wish to).
- A separate kernel is provided for users who want to and have the ability to use
APM (Advanced Power Management) on their machine. This is not the default kernel
because on some machines, the APM driver will cause the machine to lock up.
- Glibc has arrived. A patched and upgraded version of glibc is the standard libc,
with libc 5.4.38 compatibility libraries also provided.
- XFree86 3.3.2 - XFree86 3.3.2, with some custom patches and upgrades, is included.
Our version contains unaccelerated support for NeoMagic chipsets, previously only
available by purchasing AcceleratedX (however, AcceleratedX does provide better
support for the NeoMagic chipsets - but it is
expensive.)
- New X configuration tool - This new version will intelligently configure X with
as little (or as much) input from the user as desired. This version also writes
a much cleaner, easier-to-read XF86Config file format. It also merges in mouse and
keyboard configuration. This version can also test your X configuration before writing
it to disk.
- An all new package manager - Don't worry, we're still using RPM, but we have
a new program called turbopkg which is a nice friendly front-end to RPM package
management, and it does not require X. It can also handle upgrades via FTP.
- ISA Plug-and-Play configuration - Version 3.0 includes a nice front-end to isapnptools,
which greatly simplifies the setup of ISA plug-and-play devices in your system.
- Improved desktop - we've changed the desktop layout to be easier to use and to
fit on 640x480 desktop screens. We've also updated our control panel tools with
a new look and increased functionality. Most notable among these is xturboservice,
a real-time service manager which has been greatly improved since Turbo Linux 1.2.
- Some new packages, such as squid (a caching web proxy server), suck (a newsfeed
grabber), the Unix Amiga Emulator (without system roms or disks, of course), the
XMame arcade game emulator (no roms), and others.
