VMware Used for Development and Quality Assurance
![]()
Palo Alto, Calif., May 31, 2000 - VMware, Inc. today announced
that Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRBA) has deployed VMware software in its engineering
and quality assurance departments. Marimba now uses VMware software to
facilitate development and testing for multiple operating system
environments.
Marimba is a leading provider of Internet infrastructure management
solutions that deliver automated deployment, transparent updates, and
dynamic maintenance of e-business applications, documents, information, and
services throughout the extended enterprise. Marimba's Castanet Application
Packager is a key infrastructure application running in large IS
environments.
Marimba needs to develop and test applications on several different
operating systems to address the wide range of operating system environments
used by its customers. In order to validate the Application Packager on
a range of Microsoft Windows( operating systems, they need a large number of
test computers that simulate customer environments.
VMware software now allows Marimba's development team to do the testing they
need to do while at the same time increasing testing productivity and
reducing hardware costs. The development team installs a set of test
environments into VMware virtual machines, and they are then able to test
the Castanet Application Packager by installing specific applications and
checking success in the various virtual machine configurations.
Rahul Ravulur, Software Engineer at Marimba, notes, "We really like the
ability to run multiple virtual machines on our desktops. We can compare
the registry settings between two machines in side-by-side windows. We've
increased our testing capacity by 70 percent simply by using it on our
development and QA desktops."
In addition, since the team can keep "clean" installs of virtual machines
on
a shared file server, each engineer can simply copy an entire virtual
machine to a local computer in order to test a specific platform and
application combination. And since VMware virtual machines are isolated
from other virtual machines as well as the host computer, Marimba engineers
can find and reproduce bugs without endangering their main work environment,
even though they are carrying out test cycles on their desktop computers.
According to VMware VP of Marketing Dave Michaud, "Marimba has been able
to increase their productivity significantly, while reducing their need for
additional hardware. VMware gives them the flexibility and power to
maximize their resources while producing a superior product."
