I' m using NortonAntivirus for Windows NT because is really the best, but Symantec have not a version for Windows 2000 Professional. I scanned my new IDE this Saturday August 07, 1999 with a Norton updated to the latest virus definition and received an alert about Windows 2000 as you can see in the photo above. But I scanned just fine and no viruses was found in my HDDs.

I visited the Symantec Web Site in order to retrieve any news about antivirus updates to Windows 2000 and I see nothing. Recently, Symantec and IBM announced a joint venture to co-develop virus technologies and an immune system for Cyberspace. These systems are designed to protect corporations and end-users alike by providing extremely rapid virus solutions for both new and existing viruses. We have added most of IBM's virus detection database entries in order to dramatically improve detection rates in Norton AntiVirus. Most notable to our customers is a slightly larger definition package size and the detection of thousands of previously undetected viruses in Norton AntiVirus In the photo below you can see the live update I performed on Symantec from my Windows 2000 Professional Beta 32 today:

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus hasn't gotten a complete makeover in version
5.0, but that's a good thing. It remains easy to use, retains its best features
and adds a few conveniences, earning the honor of 1999 software product of the
year. A new option lets you quarantine suspect files in a secure directory,
and virus updates are now offered weekly, rather than every month or two. The
interface hasn't changed much, so if you've used an earlier version, you'll
feel right at home. Small refinements uphold its excellent reputation. Happily,
none of these changes hurt performance, so scanning is as fast as ever. $39.95.
Here is the list of Norton AntiVirus currently available on Symantec Web Site:
Norton AntiVirus 5.0 for Macintosh
Norton AntiVirus 5.0 for Windows 95/98/NT Workstation
Norton AntiVirus 5.0 for Windows NT Server
Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes
Norton AntiVirus 1.5 for Microsoft Exchange
Norton AntiVirus 5.0 for OS/2
Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 3.x/DOS
Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Firewalls
Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Internet Email Gateways
Norton AntiVirus Plus for Tivoli Enterprise and IT Director
The most compelling reasons to make the switch to Windows 2000 are architectural,
and many pertain to services provided by Active Directory or the three server
flavors of the OS. There are mobile and roaming enhancements, reliability improvements,
Windows Installer services, and new trouble-prevention and management tools.
You'll also find an update to the NTFS file system that introduces encryption,
plug-and-play device detection and configuration, and new support for a wide
variety of device types, including USB, ZIP drives, infrared, and digital cameras.
We've reported in detail on most of the changes to this major upgrade to Windows
NT 4.0 in articles focusing on the first two betas of Windows 2000 (November
1998, January 1999, and May 1999). This time around we're looking at what's
new in Beta 3. Microsoft expects this to be the last major beta of Windows 2000
before the final version ships (probably this October), so this is a good time
to put the new OS through its paces. The question is: where is the specific
antivirus for this new platform? Recently I crashed on NT4 SP4 when a jackass
sent me a Windows 98 CD with Chernobyl infection and my FAT was damned. Now
I'm working on NTFS5 but I've several volumes formated in FAT and I'm scared!!!
I expect that Symantec will be solves this problem quickly!
