Hi folks!
I just replaced File Commander by FAR in my Windows NT 4 SP5 (because FAR is more improved) when I received from members of Boxer Text Editor Mailing List the information that Windows Commander is the finest file manager for my IDE! I quickly downloaded this one (wc32v352, 1,13MB) from the developers web site and tested it, Really, Windows Commander is the  best and I'm using it here. You can get a trial copy simply clicking the logo below.

At December 2, 1998 Windows Commander 3.53 was available to the  public. Version 3.53 is mainly a bugfix release. Windows Commander 3.53  also contains some Year 2000 (y2k) corrections in the FTP client,  dealing with FTP servers which provide only a 2 digit year. The rest of  the program has been tested extensively (line by line) for y2k  compliance. The next big update, 4.0, is planned for early Summer 1999.  The update will be a free download for all registered users.

Windows Commander is a file manager for Windows similar to the Windows file manager WINFILE.EXE. But Windows Commander uses a different approach: it has two fixed windows, which makes copying files much easier. Wincmd exists in two versions, 16 and 32 bit. While the 16-bit version runs fine also in 32-bit Windows, the 32-bit version cannot be used in Windows 3.1.

Windows Commander is shareware. The shareware version is freely distributable, as long as it is unchanged!

Here some key features of Windows Commander:

- Long filename support in Windows 95/98 and Windows NT (16 and 32 bit version)
- FTP client to transfer files over the Internet
- Direct access to Network Neighborhood (without mounting a drive)
- Directory history list, supports 'go back' and 'go forward'
- Directory hotlist (configurable bookmark menu) - CTRL+D
- Split/Combine big files
- Encode/Decode files in UUE, XXE and MIME format
- New flat look (old 3d look configurable)
- Supports Drag & Drop with the mouse
- 32bit: Drag&drop from and to explorer and the desktop.
- Extended copying, moving, renaming and deleting of entire trees.
- Archives are handled like subdirectories. You can easily copy files
to and from archives. The appropriate archiver program is automatically
called. Pkzip, arj, lha, rar and uc2 are all supported.
- Start menu (User-defi ned commands).
- Configurable button bar.
- Command line for the simple starting of programs with parameters.
- Enhanced search function with full text search even inside archives.
- Built in file viewer (F3) to view files of ANY SIZE in hex, binary or text
format, using either the ASCII- (DOS) or the ANSI- (Windows) character set.
